The Future of Renewable Energy and HDVC

A high-voltage听direct current (HVDC) transmission system听is the renewable energy industry鈥檚 best bet for expediting the deployment of cheap, clean power for our everyday electricity needs. In an article recently published on , GE鈥檚 Patrick Plas makes a powerful case for HVDC systems to support wind and solar power.

HVDC can be more expensive to build, but is more cost-effective long term when compared to alternating current (AC) systems. HVDC isn’t new, but is rising in popularity for its ability to interconnect grids across borders, allow more power to be transferred over longer distances, and control intermittent power with the lowest loss of energy. The global HVDC market, which is currently valued at $6.2 billion, is expected to reach $14.36 billion by the end of 2026, according to a report by Future Market Insights.

Infrastructure Projects Lobbying for Space in Trumps Plan

Marketplace has teamed听with American Public Media Reports to track proposed infrastructure projects around the country as President Trump prepares his $1 trillion plan. The first in a series of stories resulting from the partnership was released May 11, 2017,听at

According to the story, 听Trump鈥檚 team has been soliciting requests from across the country, over the past five months. APM has collected a list of more than 500 project requests covering 50 states from governors, consultants, contractors, unions, and advisers through public record requests and interviews.

Advisors to the president are estimating a project鈥檚 value based on criteria such as whether it includes private financing; how many jobs it would create; and if construction would听go faster if the president cleared regulations, speeding up permitting approvals.Among the many project types under consideration are transmission electricity lines in the Midwest, and a major gas pipeline in Alaska.

Infrastructure consultants are advising investors on terminology and methodology for getting noticed when lobbying to be听included听in the final plan.

Southern Cross Transmission Files Route in Mississippi

In a story released this week, Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern Development) announced its affiliate’s proposed Southern Cross Transmission project filed a petition for a siting certificate with the Mississippi Public Service Commission (MPSC).

The petition includes the designation of a preferred route for the MPSC’s consideration following several years of work to identify preferred placement of the line. According to the story, Pattern has engaged with landowners, farmers, foresters, and municipalities in the process of engineering the route.

The project is reported to be one of the nation’s first overhead HVDC transmission lines constructed in 20 years. Private investors are funding the project which is the only connection of low-cost renewable energy in听Texas听to the Southeast.

Pattern CEO, Mike Garland reports the project will generate jobs and economic benefits as well as provide significant reliability by connecting two robust systems.
